Five Poems About Love (in All Its Forms)

Although all the chocolates and teddy bears have probably gone on sale by now, it’s still the month of love. This year, I’d thought I do my part in celebrating all things “amore” by sharing a couple poems I’ve written over the years. From romance to self-love and everything in between, here are five poems by yours truly that focus on the theme of love.

All these poems can be found in my book Crossroads, which is available for sale on Amazon.

“The emotion that can break your heart is sometimes the very one that heals it”

Nicholas Sparks

1. What They Don’t Tell You About Love

They say that to know love is to know pain,
the world’s greatest paradoxical truth.
To know love is to know pain—
to know fear,
uncertainty, guilt.

To know love is to know pain.
But it is also knowing comfort.
To know love is to know pain,
one so great that we might flirt
with the idea of never loving again.

But to know pain
is to know hope.
And to know of love’s potential
is to know of hope.

And so, despite the pain,
despite the fear,
I will continue to choose love.
I will continue to choose hope.

2. You (I)

I never once saw you coming.
You walked into my life
with a pep in your step
and the confidence of a man
who had lived a hundred lives in one
while I had lived none.

You took me by the hand
and beneath the warmth of your soul,
I melted.

3. Resonance

It’s not often that we encounter
those kindred spirits
that make our souls,
tired and beaten
after dissonace and discord
breathe a heavy sigh of relief.

We must cherish them
regardless of whether or not
they are here to stay

4. Lonely Girl Writes a Poem

You might not think much of me,
but I’m going to pretend that you do.
Just for a second, just for tonight,
I will convince myself that you and I
are far more than just asteroids
speeding past each other
in the chaos that is The Universe.

We might not be destined to collide
or even slow down and
acknowledge each other,
but I am gong to pretend that
I am the Milky Way and you are Andromeda,
two galaxies barreling towards each other,
towards an explosive and beautifully orchestrated
Climax.

5. Reflection

This person in the mirror,
who I used to recoil at the sight of,
is mine to love and to nurture—
from the curves of her belly
to the curve in her spine.
I will learn to love every inch of her,
for now I know that there is
and will only ever be
one of her.
And I love her.
